The Editor's Bit

June is one of the months I struggle with when it comes to ideas for the cover. If it’s an even year, I can use the World Cup or Euro Championship, but I can’t do that this year. This month’s cover has no hidden messages relating to upcoming events, doesn’t invite you to identify anything or ask you to guess where I took the photo from; it’s the back of Centraal Station from the other side of the river.

I have to confess, I hadn’t crossed the river since they finished the bus station and I’ve toyed with the idea of taking a photo of the roof with its Amsterdam in big letters as a possible cover for a while, but never got round to it. The deadline for getting this Stun to the printers was rapidly approaching, so after a chat with my creative consultant, who suggested having flowers in the foreground, I went for it. I can see the ferries from my house, so I waited for the sun to come out before I made my move.

Halfway across the river, the clouds came back, but I carried on. The whole roof would never have made a good cover photo and I couldn’t find any flowers by the riverside, so we’ve got DAM and weeds instead. I like it, but there’s nothing mysterious about it, so no Cover Competition this month.

Now that I’ve made that first step of getting on the ferry, it won’t be long before I do it again. Next time, it will be to the Butcher’s Social Club on a Saturday night, where former CC Café boss René now hosts a weekly live music session. They’ve also got ex-Coco’s barman Adriaan mixing cocktails and are the answer to the age-old question of where to (legally) get a drink between 5 & 7 on a Sunday morning.

Talking of trying something new, we have a new contributor: the one and only Terry Mann. A lot of our readers will already know Terry, but how do I describe him to those that don’t? Blues man? Philosopher? Comedian? Chat Show Host? I’ll let you decide. His column is on page 5 and you can see him live in the Waterhole on Friday 16th June at 20:00.

After a volatile season, Paddy Wynne and Jordy de Leeuw shared the top spot in our Premier Predictions League and will each get a €30 voucher to spend in Coco’s Outback. The full final table is on page 21.

That’s it from me; sorry I couldn’t get more photos in, but everything else is here. Enjoy!
