The Editor's Bit

It came as no surprise that not a single person came up with an answer to last month’s Cover Competition, so it looks like I’m keeping the prize, a Canon PowerShot A1200 digital camera, a bit longer. I can reveal that I took the cover photo on the Haarlemmerstraat, outside number 94. Oh well, maybe I’ll give the camera away another time.

No prizes for this month’s cover; it’s almost time for the annual Amsterdam Sevens Rugby Tournament to kick-off. From Friday 26th to Sunday 28th May, the action will be on the pitches in Geuzenveld during the day and around the bars of the Red Light District at night. I’ll be out and about at night with my camera, as usual, and if I can get myself out of the house in daylight, I might even make the trip out to Geuzenveld.

Last year’s winners, Susie’s Saloon, will be hoping to retain their title and you can be sure it will be a wild party in the bar all weekend.

To coincide with the Sevens, Molly Malone’s will have live music on the Saturday and Sunday night. I don’t know who’s playing yet, but bar manager Steven assures me they will be great nights. He’s bringing live music back to Molly’s on a monthly basis and is going for quality over quantity this time. The Session Boyz flew in from Ireland to play in Molly’s last month; see page 26.

Easter Saturday saw the 30th anniversary of Edward opening his first bar, Mister Coco’s on Thorbeckeplein. Over the years, Coco’s got bigger and became the Coco’s Outback we all know and love, so he had to throw a party!

And what a party it was! There were a lot of familiar old faces there, so I took loads of photos, some of which are on pages 16-19.

A couple of days earlier, I bumped into Paula in Café Oporto, where she told me about the costume she’d be wearing to the party, before insisting on a selfie with the two of us.

Paula must take the crown as most featured person this month because she’s also in some of the photos I took on King’s Day; see pages 8-9 and 20-21.

All of our usual stuff is here too, so enjoy your May edition of the Amsterdam Stun.
