The Editor's Bit

I’ll start my column this month with news from the Amsterdam Stun’s oldest sponsor, the Flying Dutchman. Just before Christmas, I heard that David had sold the bar and new owners would be taking over from the 1st of January, but nobody knew anything about their plans for the place.

We were none the wiser at David’s Leaving Party (page 16), Tineke had visions of claiming unemployment benefit for the first time in her life and our roving reporter Josie sent me a photo of Chris and Hughie, who feared it could mean the end of their Friday Darts night.

When I saw the Dutchman was open on the 2nd of January, I dropped in to introduce myself to the new owner, but he wasn’t there; Tineke was behind the bar! She’d met him for the first time earlier that day, he’d asked her to stay on and told her about his plans for the Flying Dutchman. In short, he’s going to close the bar for a couple of days for a bit of renovation, get a smaller coffee machine and start serving hot bar-snacks. Apart from that, it will remain the Flying Dutchman we all know and love, although there’s a good chance they will get a terrace in the not too distant future.

I finally got round to taking part in Molly Malone’s Pub Quiz! Lesley and myself, along with Rain Dogs teammates Martin and Conor, came in 6th, but we were only 2 points away from a cash prize. We came unstuck in the Music round (hits of 2017), which was ironic because me and Lesley slaughtered everybody at the Music Quiz in the Poolbar a couple of weeks earlier.

The next Pub Quiz in Molly Malone’s is on Wednesday 31st January, the Poolbar have a Pub Quiz on the first Monday of the month, plus a Music Quiz on Sundays, and Coco’s Outback’s next International Pub Quiz is on Tuesday 6th February.

No Cover Competition this month; it’s the Whole Hole at the Amsterdam Light Festival! All of our usual stuff is here, so enjoy your first Amsterdam Stun of 2018.
